Who Invented the May Table?
This surgical table was invented by the brothers William Mayo and Charles Mayo, sons of the doctor William Worrall Mayo, founder of the prestigious Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, United States. The two brothers, both surgeons, took over from their father's Mayo Clinic and introduced several innovations in the field of surgery, the surgical Mayo table being one of them.
What is the May table for?
This auxiliary table is used to place all the surgical instruments that the surgeon will need immediately to perform an operation. The objective is to have all the surgical material at hand to continue with the specific times of the intervention according to the surgeon's maneuvers. In this way, the scrub nurse does not waste time looking for the material that the surgeon requests during the operation.
Where is the May table placed?
During the operation, two more tables are used apart from the May table: the kidney table and the instrument table. The location of the table of surgical instruments is extremely important for a correct development of the operation. It must be placed in a place that allows the scrub nurse to be able to visualize the surgeon's movements and indications at all times.
The scrub nurse must follow the development of the operation at all times and anticipate the needs of the surgeon and his team, who are generally positioned on the right side to perform the interventions.
The Mayo table, as it contains the instruments that the surgeon will need immediately, is placed on the patient without coming into contact with him, thanks to its only foot that is on one side of the table.
How is surgical instruments prepared on the table?
The instrumentalist is in charge of arranging the instruments on the surgical auxiliary table, and must do so taking into account the order in which they will be needed and the times of the operation. To do this, perform a division of the May table.
• Posterior half: in this part of the table, place the necessary instruments for cutting, hemostasis, traction and suturing.
• Look anterior: in this part, place the necessary instruments for dissection and separation.
